How Combat Works
There are two ways to participate in combat:
1. Narrative Combat
2. Rolling Combat
Each way has its pros and cons, but each way is meant to be as simple as possible. Before we go into each way let's first look at how health works.
Health
Every Moonbeym starts off with a certain amount of Health based on their life stage.
Babies - 5
Teens - 15
Adults - 25
Now your Health gets bigger based on traits and combat training. For example, a trait will tell you if it adds to your health. Also since combat makes you more skilled and provides exercise, getting higher in combat gives you a bigger health pool.
You can always look at your Masterlist entry to see what your base health is. When doing combat, we will always look at your Masterlist for your base health. So make sure you have your Masterlist entry up-to-date before going into battle.
Items/Potions
Items and potions can give a boost to your health as well as provide other benefits in a fight.
Effects
Effects are usually an added thing a magic spell or magical item does for you. For example, maybe you freezes someone, giving you an extra turn.
Encounters
Combat situations are called encounters. When faced with an encounter you have the option to fight, flee, or if the creature is tamable, tame.
Fleeing will mean you lose all rewards.
A failed taming will give you the option to fight or flee.
A failed fight means you still get at least 1 reward.
Energy
Remember before entering combat you must have energy! Read about Energy.
Narrative Combat
Narrative combat focuses on battling with art and writing. Your goal is to defeat the enemy by getting their health points down before they get yours down. If your health points hit zero you go unconscious and lose the battle. Narrative Battles have a time limit of three days. If the enemy isn't defeated in that time period they flee and you get a negative to your rewards.
1. When an encounter happens you will get a message on the submission it is tied to (usually an exploration or event post) from staff with a link.
2. The link will show you the monster you encountered, including health points, damage range, and any effects.
3. Reply to the comment saying whether you plan to fight, flee, or tame. You have three days to respond or it defaults to flee.
4. - Flee and that ends the encounter and you do not get any rewards or resources. (Unless you have a special item that lets you.)
- Tame and follow the instructions in Animal Tamer Career. If you fail to tame, then you are given the choice to fight or flee.
- Fight and it's time to battle it out with art.
5. Once a fight begins you have three days to complete it. There will be a message stating if the monster attacks first or you do. In order to attack you must draw or submit writing and comment with it. Each drawing counts as an attack and does damage or not depending.
Sketch - 1 damage
Colored Art - 3 damage
Polished Art - 5 damage
Writing - 1 damage every 300 words
If you want to use a magic attack you must draw or write about it. This will trigger an effect that may or may not work.
A moderator will respond to every comment with the health points to which fighter and whether an attack hits or missed and what damage the monster does in return.
6. -You win the fight! The monster hits zero. A moderator will list your rewards and put it in your bank. If you have secondaries the same will happen with them depending on if they fought or fled. You will also get a list of any injuries you sustained
- You lost the fight. You hit zero instead of the monster. A moderator will list the rewards you did manage to get as well as any injuries you sustained.
-You time out. The monster flees and you are left with nothing. In this case, if you have multiple entries showing effort you may still get the lost fight reward. You will also get a list of injuries you sustained.
Rolling Combat
While Narrative Combat uses art to fight, rolling combat is about using rolls. This is done on the Discord server. Your goal is still the same, to defeat your enemies but the fighting is a little more complex but also much quicker. While rolling does happen with Narrative, it is behind the scenes. With rolling, the player is directly involved.
1. When an encounter happens you will get a message on the submission it is tied to (usually an exploration or event post) from staff notifying you that an encounter room has been created for your party.
2. In the combat room, you can ping staff to see if they are available or schedule an encounter with a date and time through our calendar.
3. Once staff is ready they will ask you some questions and then give you information on what you'll be rolling. There are three things you will be rolling - attack, defense, effects.
Attack is based on combat and magic skills.
The type of weapon/magic and your level in it.
You can look at Basic, Intermediate, Advance Combat/Magic, Infusion, and Sage Magic to see what your ranges are
Defense is based on weapon/magic choice and traits.
Traits and weapon/magic add to your defense roll.
Don't worry, mods will tell you what ranges you are rolling for attacks and defense.
Effects

Effects are items or spells that give you a special effect. Such as a freeze that stops a monster from attacking. Or a lightning spell that adds damage. For effects you roll: !1d10.
The effect description will tell you what you need to roll for it to work.
Items/Potions
There are items you can use to help you in a fight. They give you a + to a roll.
Example: You rolled an attack with a range of 15. !1d15. You rolled a 9, but your sword gives you +1 attack. 9+1=10. You attack was 10! Great job.
So what this means is items and potions add to your roll.
Traits and combat skills add to your range.
Example- Your attack range is 1-10, but you have claws that give you +2 attack. Your range is not 1-12. So instead of rolling a !1d10 you now roll a !1d12.
If you are ever confused, ask a mod in the exploration channel. Don't ask in the combat room so that things stay clean.
Narrative vs. Rolling Combat
Narrative:
-All rolling is done by staff
-Focused on art/writing
-Slower time frame to complete
-Less focus on stats and more on art
-All art can earn beym points
Rolling:
-Players roll for themselves
-More focus on stats and items
-Only one session needed to complete and get rewards
We do offer tutorials on set dates and times so people can practice rolling combat.
Arena
While Encounters are staff run enemies, the arena is specially designed for players vs. player fights (PvP). You can use narrative or rolling combat and they are free for teen and adults to use. Sorry babies, but no fighting for you.
Official Arena fights are different. They pit players against each other and the winner gets a reward. There is a Crescent entry fee as well. Whenever an official arena fight is to happen there will be a notification if it is a rolling fight or a narrative fight followed by a sign up.
